OVERVIEW OF PhD PROGRAMME



  1. BITS Pilani offers Ph.D programme under following schemes Full Time PhD, Part Time PhD, Faculty development scheme, PhD aspirant scheme.
  2. The overall operation of Ph.D programme is governed by the Academic Regulations of the Institute. The students are required to refer clause 8 of academic regulations for further details.


Essential qualifications M.E. / M.Tech. / M.Pharm. / MBA / M.Phil. / M.Sc. / B.E. / B.Pharm or an equivalent degree / M.A. degree


Department : Admission in department of Biological Science, Engineering, pharmacy economics, social science, humanities, management, chemistry, mathematics, physics.


Exam center : Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Dubai, Goa, Hyderabad, kolkata, Pilani, Pune.

Eligible countries : International students are eligible to apply.

Applications invited for 2nd  Semester admission to PhD Programme (full time and part time) starting January 2019 in Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad campuses of BITS Pilani in the following Departments:


  1. Science: Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics 
  2. Engineering: Chemical, Civil, Computer Science, Electrical & Electronics, Mechanical 
  3. Pharmacy
  4. Economics and Finance, Management, Humanities and Social Sciences.


MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY  :

(a) M.E/M.Pharm./MBA/ M.Phil of BITS or its equivalent with a minimum of 60% aggregate.

(b) Candidate with an M Sc/B.E or an equivalent with a minimum of 60% will also be considered for provisional admission to the Ph D programme. For Ph D programme in languages and humanities, candidates with an M.Phil/M A and with minimum of 55% aggregate may also be considered. Such candidates have to undergo a minimum of two semester course work prescribed by DRC.


(c) The rare and special case of a person of high professional standing and proven competence who is deemed to have acquired mastery over all or substantial part of the course work of a higher degree of the Institute through long professional experience;


 M.E. / M.Tech. / M.Pharm. / MBA / M.Phil. (minimum of 60% in aggregate) •   M.Sc. / B.E. / B.Pharm or an equivalent degree (minimum of 60% in aggregate) •   For admission into Humanities and Social Sciences, M.A. degree (minimum of 55% in aggregate).



FULL TIME PhD

Full-time Students Preferably individuals who would like to pursue PhD in-house, residing on campus


PART TIME PhD

A person working in reputed research organizations, academic Institutes and industries, situated preferably in the close vicinity of one of the campuses of BITS Pilani, can be admitted on part time basis provided

(i) the candidate is working in an organization which encourages and facilitates research


(ii) candidate meets the requisite minimum qualification for admission to Ph. D programme of BITS Pilani as mentioned in (a), (b) or (c)


(iii) candidate has minimum of one year work experience in related field, and (iv) candidate furnishes a "consent & no objection certificate"  from his/her parent organization.


(iv)Part-time Students Preferably individuals working in organizations providing basic facilities and environment for research.




FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE :

Full time PhD students admitted into the PhD programme are eligible to be considered for an Institute fellowship of 25,000/- per month in the rst year. Higher assistantship will be made available in subsequent years. Consideration for fellowship will be as per Institute norms. It will be obligatory on the part of every admitted full time students to undertake 8 to 10 hours (per week) of work as assigned to him/her by the institute.

To create your login at the Application Center by entering your unique Email ID and create a password of your choice.
Once you have logged in
Begin by clicking on :
  1. Step 1 ‘Fill/ Edit and Submit Application Form’.
  2. Step 2 - 'Download Application PDF Copy’.
  3. Now, click on Step 3 - 'Pay Application Fee’ to pay INR 1,500/- using Netbanking/ Debit Card/ Credit Card.
  4. Finally, click on Step 4 - 'Upload & Submit All Required Documents’.
Admission Cell will intimate selected candidates by email within two weeks of submission of application with all supporting documents. The selection status can also be checked by logging in to the Online Application Centre.

WRITTEN TEST DETAILS 

A. Candidates shortlisted for test in any of the following Departments:  Biological Sciences/Chemistry/Mathematics/Physics will have to write two tests. 
  1. Test-I will be common to all disciplines and 
  2. Test-II will be discipline specific. The details of the tests are as follows:  

Test-I : question paper consists of 30 multiple-choice type questions pertaining to General Science, Quantitative Reasoning & Analysis and Research Aptitude. The duration of Test – I will be 1 hr. Each correct answer will be awarded two marks. 0.5 marks will be deducted for every wrong answer.  


Test-II : will be subject-based and will consist of 70 multiple-choice type questions covering the prescribed syllabus of relevance to the candidate.


Duration of Test

The duration of Test – II will be 2 hr. Each correct answer will be awarded two marks. 0.5 marks will be deducted for every wrong answer.  Candidates with M.Phil. / M.E. / M.Tech. or with National level fellowships like CSIR NET-JRF, DBT-JRF, UGC NET-JRF etc. are exempted from taking the above test.  

B. Candidates shortlisted for Test in any of the following Departments:  Humanities & Social Sciences/Economics will have to write two tests. 

  1. Test-I will be common to all disciplines and 
  2. Test-II will be discipline specific. The details of the tests are as follows:  
Test-I : will comprise of the following components:




Test-II : will be discipline specific: Subjective questions for Humanities & Social Sciences & multiple-choice type questions for Economics.

Candidates with a M.Phil. degree or with fellowships like CSIR NET-JRF, DBT-JRF, UGC NET-JRF etc. are exempted from taking the above test   


C. All Candidates shortlisted for PhD programme in the Department of Management will be required to take a written test of duration 1 hr  

D. Candidates with a B.E./B.Pharm. or an equivalent degree, if shortlisted, will be required to take a written test.  Based on the test results, there may be shortlisting of candidates for Interview.  All notices/shortlists will be put on admission website www.bitsadmission.com Candidates are advised to check this website regularly. No written communication will be sent to candidates.



IMPORTANT GUIDELINES

  1. Candidates are requested to read the PhD Admission brochure carefully and also visit Department website of respective campuses for further detail about PhD admission and/or programme admnoc@pilani.bits-pilani.ac.in
  2. Admission to the Ph D programme is made in both the semesters against the advertisement, which can be checked at www.bitsadmission.com the candidates have to apply along with details required in the application form.
  3. A candidate is normally admitted to the Ph.D. programme after passing his/her Ph.D. qualifying examination. 
  4. A few candidates may be admitted to the programme as provisional candidates before passing the Ph.D. qualifying examination. This provision is applicable to full time research scholars on the campus.
  5. Industries and R & D Organizations collaborating with BITS can sponsor candidates to work for Ph.D under the Ph.D Aspirants Scheme. 
  6. Under this Scheme such Employed professionals working in Industries and R&D Organizations having long experience and proven competence aspiring for Ph.D. programme will be considered and will be allowed to pursue their research at their own locations of work. They will choose one BITS faculty as supervisor and or as co-supervisor.
  7. In addition, Departments may set specic admission criteria for shortlisting. Shortlisted candidates will have to appear for an admission test, which may comprise of a written exam and/or interview. Information on specic Departments and related research activities is available on the Department homepage of respective campuses.
