PhD Programme description

As genome projects for animals, plants and microorganisms continue to advance, new opportunities arise that offer huge potential benefits in healthcare, agriculture and the environment through the production of new drugs, novel crops and bioremediation.

The University of Manchester is home to the UK Centre for Tissue Engineering and enjoys strong links with industry. We are well placed to exploit emerging research opportunities with industry through the purpose-built BioSciences Incubator, where companies that spin out from our basic research are located.

Research in biotechnology is diverse, and the following areas represent just a few examples:

wound healing injury and repair,
cancer biology,
arthritis research,
appetite and body weight,
neurodegeneration and movement disorders,
animal cell biotechnology,
microbial pathogenicity and production of therapeutics,
biofuelsgenetic engineering of cropscontainment of transgenes in the environment,
bioremediation of terrestrial and aquatic environments,
bioinformatics.


Special features

Training and development
All of our postgraduate research students attend the Doctoral Academy Training Programme delivered by the Centre for Academic and Researcher Development (CARD).

The PhD programme provides key transferable skills in areas such as commercial awareness, academic writing and public engagement. This training equips our postgraduates with the tools to progress beyond their research degree into influential positions within academia, industry and consultancy.

The emphasis is on enhancing skills critical to developing early-stage researchers and professionals, whether they relate to effective communication, disseminating research findings and project management skills.


Teaching and learning
PhD/MPhil programmes are based on individual research projects that last three to four years (PhD) or one year (MPhil), working with a specific Primary Supervisor and Co-Supervisor(s).

Applicants are specifically matched with a Primary Supervisor and individual project based on their research interests and background.

International applicants interested in this research area can also consider the our PhD programme with integrated teaching certificate .

This unique PhD programme will enable you to gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning, whilst also carrying out independent research on your chosen project.


Scholarships and bursaries
Funded PhD programmes and projects are promoted throughout the year. Funding is available through UK Research Councils, charities and industry. We also have other internal awards and scholarships for the most outstanding applicants from within the UK, EU and overseas.

Academic entry qualification overview
We require applicants to hold, or be about to obtain, an Upper Second class Honours degree (or overseas equivalent) in a related subject area for entry to a PhD programme. A Lower Second class Honours degree may be considered if applicants also hold a Master's degree with a Merit classification.



English language

For applicants whose first language is not English, or if you have not studied recently in the UK, you  must  supply an official IELTS or TOEFL transcript to support your application, or provide a date on which you will be taking a test.

If your IELTS or TOEFL expires before the start of your programme, you will need to take another official English test before we can issue you with a CAS for your visa application. This is a requirement of UKVI.

We require a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 overall or TOEFL (iBT) 90.

Each component of the English test should meet the minimum requirement of IELTS 5.5 in all components or 22 in TOEFL (iBT). For the  writing component  in IELTS we expect that you have achieved a minimum of 6.0.

For entry in the academic year beginning September 2019, the tuition fees are as follows:

PhD program (full-time) ( doctoral programs)

UK/EU students (per annum): Standard TBA, Low £8,750, Medium £15,500, High £20,500

International students (per annum): Standard £23,000, Low £24,000, Medium £30,500, High £35,500



How to apply

You should then complete the online application form to apply for the doctoral programs Ensure you include all required supporting documents at the time of submission, or this may delay the processing of your application.

Applications must be submitted online well in advance of your anticipated start date (6 weeks for Home/EU, 12 weeks for overseas).  We cannot accept late applications without prior agreement via the Doctoral Academy.


Application deadlines

Home/EU applicants:
  1. September entry - apply by 15 July
  2. January entry - apply by 15 November
  3. April entry - apply by 15 February


Overseas applicants:
  1. September entry - apply by 1 st week of June
  2. January entry - apply by 1 st week of October
  3. April entry - apply by 1 st week of January


Advice to PhD applicants

  1. In addition to the formal online application, candidates should send all supporting documents (CV, transcripts, certificates, confirmation of funding, English language ability (if applicable), references and a personal statement).
  2. About the personal statement We recommend that your personal statement summarises: any research experience and your interests;your motivation for postgraduate research study;why you want to do a postgraduate research degree in Manchester;your career development to date;your future career plans;other supporting information: recent publications if any or other research training and experience.
  3. If you have completed a research project during your undergraduate/master's study, please give a short description of the work you undertook, including the following details: the research problem your key findings techniques acquired and skills learned.
  4. This information is especially important for applicants from overseas, so we can fully assess your practical background and experience alongside your academic qualifications. Failure to include this information may delay the processing of your application.

Interview requirements

Candidates will be required to attend an interview with their prospective supervisor as well as a Postgraduate Tutor. If it is not possible for you to attend in person, we are able to interview by Skype/video conferencing.

Disclosure and Barring Service check
Depending on the project you undertake, you may be required to undertake DBS screening.  We will notify of you this requirement if appropriate.


Application checklist

  1. Make a note of the application deadline, if there is one. We generally advise you to apply as early as possible. If you are applying to a specific programme with attached funding, application deadlines are often at the beginning of December, or even earlier for the start of the programme the following September. If you are planning to apply for a scholarship or award that is not attached to a particular project, it is normally stipulated that you hold an offer of a place from the University before applying, so you are encouraged to apply early.      
  2. Choose and make contact with your potential supervisor
  3. Make sure you have evidence of prior academic qualifications to hand – these will be certificates or transcripts to show that you meet, or expect to meet the entry requirements.
  4. Provide evidence of English language ability, if English is not your first language. Please note that some English language test results are only valid for two years. Your English language test report must be valid on the start date of your programme.
  5. Obtain two references – download our referee report form (PDF document, 50 KB)Prepare a research proposal/piece of academic writing, if required. This will be specified on the relevant academic School website.
  6. Make a copy of your passport, if you will need a visa to study in the UK.
  7. Prepare a personal statement/statement of purpose, if required. This will be specified on the relevant academic School website.
  8. Prepare your CV this is required for certain funded or project-linked awards.
