Introduction :

Admissions to Ph.D. programs at Amity University campuses are conducted twice a year, for January and July sessions. A Ph.D. program is offered in two modes- Full time and Part time and not in a distance learning mode. Hence, coursework, participation in various interactions, submission of progress reports through presentations etc. on regular basis is mandatory during the program. A Full-time Ph.D. scholar shall mean a candidate devoting full time for completing the requirements of the program and a part- time Ph.D. scholar shall mean a candidate who is devoting a part of his time towards the pursuit of the program while discharging his official / employment obligations. 

Hence, Part time Candidates are expected to ensure they get adequate organisational help and a relevant setup at their workplace that also enables them to engage in research work. Ph.D. full time is for minimum 3 years and Ph.D. part time for minimum 4 ½ years. Maximum duration in case of both the modes is 6 years. Amity encourages interdisciplinary research and exchange of ideas and knowledge in various related fields. Consequently, it allows scholars to appoint a Co-Guide from outside Amity University as per university rules. The main Guide for the scholar during the Ph.D. program will be from Amity University, appointed as per the research topic and Guide availability. Ph.D full time enthusiasts have the scope to work as research fellows in the various ongoing prestigious research projects in the university.

Admission Procedure

Applications for admission to a Ph.D. program at Amity University are accepted twice a year, for January and July sessions. Candidates seeking admission to the Ph.D. program, whether full time or part time, shall have to possess requisite percentage of marks / grade point average / subjects/ specializations in qualifying examination as indicated under each Ph.D. program:

Candidate who apply for Ph.D part time , will have to submit their employment verification details at the time of form filling and NOC as per format, at the time of joining after their selection to the program The admission Form is to be filled and submitted ONLINE ONLY along with required documents uploaded in the given format and an online payment of Rs 1100/- made via a Credit / Debit card. 

No hard copies will be accepted. Candidates may refer to the section 'Application Form' for the following :List of essential documents that must be uploaded while applying. Guidelines on how to write a Preliminary Research Idea. To check / do the following related to your admission, logon to your Admission Micro site on www.amity.edu/phd(admission micro site login) by using your form no. & password generated at the time of applying online :

Check your selection status. Print Admission letter after you have been selected. Check confirmation of fee payment after making payment. Candidates will be communicated about requirements related to their application form, date, time and venue of selection process (written test and / or Interview) ONLY ON THE ADMISSION MICRO SITE at www.amity.edu or in the Amity Mobile App available at www.amity.edu/app. 

In certain cases, options of dates will be available giving greater flexibility. It is the responsibility of the candidate to periodically check the admission micro site for updates and to select a date for PET. 

No separate communication will be sent in this regard. Eligible candidates will be required to undertake PET (Ph.D. Entrance Test), on the date selected by them. PET will be a computer based test (CBT) followed by an Interview, on the same day Selected candidates will be intimated about their selection on the Admission Micro site. .

A printable online admission letter wiil be uploaded on the admission micro site within the two days of candidate selection. This will carry details regarding payment of fees at the time of admission, date, time and venue for commencement of the academic session etc. Offer of admission will be provisional & valid only for the specific program opted by the candidate as well as for the same academic session. 

The offer of admission will automatically stand cancelled if the conditions are not fulfilled by the specified time.

Entrance Test Details :

The Entrance Test shall be of one and half hour duration (i.e. 90 minutes) and of 70 marks consisting of 95 objective type of questions. The Entrance Test will have two Sections (administered in one go), as mentioned here under:

  2. Documents required during Ph.D form filling : Scanned passport size photograph: (jpg, gif, png, jpeg, bmp). The dimensions of the photograph should be 3.5 x 4.5cm width.   3. Employment Verification Certificate  [click here] Applicable to those who are employed and are applying for a Part time PhD Program. A valid personal e-mail ID. Application fees of Rs. 1100/- using Debit / Credit card. Important :Candidate seeking admission to Ph.D. must apply online only. 
  4. Hard copies will not be accepted. Online Application Form will not get registered untill the candidate has submitted all the required documents mentioned above. Applicants in their final semester/ year of post graduation may apply but their form will be registered and they will be offered a PET date only on receipt of the pending document latest by five days prior to Amity's last PET of the academic session.
  5. Merely submission of an application form, does not constitute a claim for an offer date for the selection procedure or admission to the program. 
  6. The form may be rejected due to deficiency in the supporting documents, not following the prescribed procedures or any other valid reason.
  7. An Application Form Number and Password is generated on submission of the application form which will be required for future reference. 
  8. A mail is sent to the applicant in this regard on the registered email-id. Candidates are advised to keep a printed copy of the online Application Form.
  9. The Application Form Number and Password which is generated on submission of the application form is required to check / do the following related to your admission.

Important Points:

Date of Registration :
The date of registration of the candidate shall be the date of payment of fees. The registration period will end on the date of submission of Ph.D thesis.

Residency Period :

  1. The minimum Residency Period for full time as well as part time candidates in the Department / Constituent Unit shall ordinarily be one year. 
  2. This period, in exceptional circumstances, can be reduced to not less than six months by URC on the recommendations of DRC. 
  3. Residency period does not imply that the scholar stays in the university campus. It only means that S/he resides in the proximity of the campus to enable her/him to attend coursework classes on regular basis on assigned days, since, an attendance of 75% is mandatory to be able to take a comprehensive examination at the end of coursework.


Attendance Requirement 
Minimum 75% attendance is required during residency period.

Course Work 
All candidates admitted to Ph. D. programs have to compulsorily do the course work assigned and shall be required to take a written examination for the same. Coursework period will ordinarily be of minimum six months duration. A candidate will earn credits for a Course Unit only if he obtains a minimum of Grade B+ (Points 07 on scale of 10). If a candidate fails to get qualifying Grade B+, he / she will be given second opportunity to improve his/her qualifying Grade to B+, i.e. Point 7 on ten point scale failing which his/her registration is liable to be cancelled.
Scholars shall be required to undertake coursework for a minimum period of one semester, not exceeding one academic year from the date of the provisional registration

Tentative class timings during coursework period:

Ph.D. Full time : All working days, 9.00 am-5.30 pm
Ph.D. Part time : Saturday-Sunday, 9.00 am-5.30 pm

Comprehensive Examination 
Each candidate, on completion of course work, shall be required to take a comprehensive examination which will test his/her comprehension or knowledge in his/her broad field of research and his/her academic preparation and potentials to carry out the research work. The comprehensive examination shall be combination of both written and oral examinations and shall be conducted by the faculty. The candidate is required to secure at least Grade B (Points 06 on scale of 10) in comprehensive examination.

Minimum and Maximum Degree Duration 
Candidate will be given the time duration for submission of his / her Ph.D. thesis (from the date of registration) as per the details given below:



Fee Structure for Ph.D programs :

The Prescribed Fees* for an Indian National candidate is as under :

1. Registration Fee Rs 10,000/-
2. Security Deposit Rs 10,000/-
3. Academic Fee a.  Noida Campus :
Rs. 50,000/- per semester for full time
Rs. 33,500/- per semester for part time

b.  For Gurgaon, Jaipur & Lucknow Campuses :
Rs. 40,000/- per semester for full time
Rs. 25,000/- per semester for part time

c.  For Gwalior, Mumbai & Raipur Campuses :
Rs. 30,000/- per semester for full time
Rs. 20,000/- per semester for part time


Fee for a Foreign National candidate is as under:
1. Registration Fee Rs 10,000/-
2. Security Deposit Rs 10,000/-
3. Academic Fee Rs. 75,000/- per semester for full time 

Rs. 50,000/- per semester for part time


Note :

  1. Semester fee of Ph.D. in Built Environment will be as mentioned under this program in the 'Ph.D programs offered' list Fee will be paid semester wise for the two semesters in a year. 
  2. Enrolled scholar will pay fee for the minimum period (minimum 3 years for Ph.D full time and 4.5 years for Ph.D part time) and for the period they stay enrolled until thesis submission, upper limit being 6 yearsFee concession to Amity Academic/ Non-academic Staff, JRF/SRF/RA/ARF/SARF employed in the University, national level examination scholarship holders or scholars from all such labs where Amity University has Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), if applicable, is allowed by the University on case to case basis and as per the system in vogue).The Security Deposit will be refunded after completion of Ph.D.


* Fee is subject to revision from time to time as decided by the University.



Eligibility Criteria for Admission :

Candidates seeking admission to the Ph.D. Program, whether full time or part time, shall have to possess requisite percentage of marks / grade point average in qualifying examination as indicated below:


  1. The required minimum qualification for admission to a Ph.D Program shall normally be a two years Master’s OR M.Phil Degree from any accredited Indian or Foreign University in the relevant field. She/he must have obtained 55% marks or Equivalent Grade in the Master’s or M.Phil Degree (applicable for all PhD programs except in Engineering and Technology).
  2. Applicants who have successfully completed their first year degree course (Undergraduate course) by 04/June/1986, irrespective of the duration, shall be treated at par with those who have completed a three year first degree course. 
  3. Those who hold a two year first degree and had enrolled for this course after 04/June/1986, will be required to undergo a further one year bridge course. Tech / M.E./M.S. qualification in relevant disciplines with excellent academic record with minimum CGPA of 6.0 on a 10 point scale or equivalent or 60% marks and with 60% aggregate in Xth , XIIth and B.Tech/B.E. will be considered eligible for admission in Ph.D. Programs in Engineering and Technology.
  4. For Ph.D. in Law, the applicant should possess Master’s degree in Law with minimum 55% marks or equivalent grade or M. Phil in law.
  5. Applicants with Chartered Accountancy (CA) Qualification from 'The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India' (ICAI)/ Cost and Works Accountancy of ICWAI/ Company Secretary of ICSI with a minimum 55% marks or equivalent grade may be considered eligible for admission to Ph.D. 
  6. Programs in the relevant field. Foreign/ NRI applicants / Applicants with a Masters’ degree from a foreign university must apply with an equivalence certificate of AIU along with the Online Application Form. Exemption from Written Examination:
  7. Candidates who have cleared an All India Examination or NET of UGC / CSIR / ICAR (ASRB) / GPAT / ICMR / GATE / DST - INSPIRE within the last 2 years from the time of applying for PhD at Amity, shall be exempted from the written part of the selection process. However, they will be required to appear for the Personal Interview.




Classification of Applicants :

An Indian candidate applying for admission to the Ph.D. Program shall be classified under any one of the following categories:

1. Sponsored Candidates: Sponsored candidates getting Government / Semi Govt. / Private or other Scholarships/ Fellowships /stipends, who apply for admission through the sponsoring organizations.

2. Regular Self - Financed Candidates: students, self- employed or other working / non-working candidates.

3. Corporate Research Scholar: Candidates working with reputed organizations in India and having at least five years experience and possessing minimum prescribed academic qualifications.

4. Working Faculty other than Amity: Faculty members of other Universities /schools and recognized/ approved institutions/schools in India, possessing minimum prescribed academic qualifications.

5. Regular Academic Staff of Amity: Regular academic staff of Department/ Constituent Units of Amity University who are allowed to register for Ph.D. on part time basis.

6. Regular Non-Academic Staff of Amity: Regular member of non-academic staff of the University and its Departments/ Constituent Units who satisfies eligibility qualifications and is allowed to be registered for a part-time Ph.D. program.

7. Amity Research Fellow (ARF): Candidates working under fellowship scheme of Amity Science, Technology & Innovation Foundation (ASTIF).

Candidates working as JRF/SRF/RA in Research Projects in Amity University and meeting the eligibility criteria. Candidates working as JRF/SRF/RA in Organizations NOT under MoU with Amity University Uttar Pradesh.

Candidates who are working in reputed Labs under MoU with Amity University Uttar Pradesh. 

8. A foreign national will apply under the foreign candidate category.

As part of its Nation Building activities, the Amity Science, Technology & Innovation Foundation (ASTIF) awards Fellowships to brilliant young researchers and scientists. Fellowships are available in all disciplines and are not restricted in number.


Eligibility for Fellowship for Ph.D. :

The candidate must have first class academic record throughout up to Master's Degree from a recognized college / University. The ASTIF Fellowship will be given to only those candidates who are not getting fellowship from any other agency and those who have shown remarkable progress in research work after joining Amity's PhD Program.
